LIVELIHOOD FOR RURAL WOMEN

Aligned to SDG Goals

No.1 : No Poverty, No. 5: Gender Equality &  No. 8 : Decent Work and Economic Growth

At Apollo Tyres, the Social and Relationship Capital is built on the principles of collaboration and mutualism. As a leading global tyre manufacturer, we take our responsibility seriously in transforming neighbouring communities into self-sustaining ecosystems, creating shared value for everyone involved.

We are dedicated to transforming rural communities into vibrant, self-sustaining ecosystems. Our focus on creating shared value extends across local, national, and global levels. Our social initiatives tackle the issues that truly matter, leveraging synergies to drive meaningful change where it is needed most.

We recognise that women play a crucial role in ensuring household wellbeing, especially in rural areas. Yet, the lack of agency and limited access to resources leaves them with minimal opportunities for livelihood.

Apollo Tyres is determined to change this landscape, spearheading effective programmes that deliver measurable results. Every strategy and programme we implement is thoughtfully designed to address specific Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring that our impact is both significant and lasting.

NAVYA

Skilling for a Brighter Tomorrow

The Company initiated the ‘Navya’ skill-building and income generation programme to address poverty and the low social status of women in communities adjacent to its manufacturing facilities. This programme is designed to enhance the capabilities of women by establishing and reinforcing Self-Help Groups (SHGs) within these regions. The primary objective of this initiative is to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and cultivate entrepreneurial skills among rural women. Participants in the programme undergo training in both agricultural and non-agricultural activities, thereby facilitating their connection to market opportunities and augmenting their income potential. Consequently, numerous trained women have successfully established their own businesses, thereby supported their families and generating employment opportunities for other women within their villages.

Key Initiatives

1.Self-help Group (SHG)

Self Help Groups (SHGs) serve as a powerful tool for women’s empowerment by uniting women and driving change. Apollo Tyres, through its Navya initiative, takes a decisive two-pronged approach: first, by strengthening existing SHGs and second, by establishing new ones. This program not only instils the essential habit of saving among women but also equips them with vital training in financial literacy, bookkeeping, documentation, and more. Moreover, it addresses critical social issues, including domestic violence and gender rights. In FY25, the Company engaged 2,185 beneficiaries through impactful livelihood initiatives and successfully formed 14 new SHGs.

2.Livelihood training and income generation

Skill development and training are crucial for building earning capacity, achieving economic independence, and creating sustainable livelihoods. The initiative consists of comprehensive training programs that cover both farm-based and non-farm-based activities, ensuring a wide range of opportunities. The Company also provide specialised training in livestock care and management to maximise income generation potential. In FY25, 1,605 women have successfully completed its livelihood training, and 1,800 have actively engaged in various income generation activities.

3.Linkages with government schemes and markets

The Navya programme significantly empowers rural women by creating livelihood opportunities and directly linking them to various government-run schemes and relevant markets. This strategic approach generates a multiplier effect that substantially enhances their socio-economic status. While government schemes offer crucial financial support, the connection to markets and the service sector actively fuels entrepreneurship. In FY25 alone, 7,513 women were successfully linked to vital government welfare schemes, resulting in impressive collective benefits totalling approximately INR 7.2 crore.
